A junior’s advice on how to apply.

As a junior in the Mountain Range High School of Business program, I have gained first-hand experience with real-world business laws, tactics, procedures, and scenarios that all prepare me for my future career, whether I know what I’m going to do after high school or not. This thought alone can be scary, especially for incoming first-year students. Freshmen students don’t typically think about life after graduation when they are still trying to figure out how high school itself works, to begin with. Take it from me; it can be overwhelming initially, but my High School of Business classes have assisted me in developing a well-rounded skill set, a bolder personality, and a deeper understanding of the business world. The courses incorporated into the High School of Business program are as follows:

9th Grade

Semester 1: Principles of Business

Semester 2: Economics

10th Grade

Semester 1: Principles of Marketing

Semester 2: Principles of Finance

11th Grade

Semester 1: Principles of Management

Semester 2: Business Strategies

12th Grade

Semester 1: Business Communication

Semester 2: International Marketing

Or

Semester 1: Introduction to Entrepreneurship

Semester 2: Principles of Management (Small Business)

These courses allow students to gain college credit which could be highly beneficial for our futures in college or trades and beyond. Also, it is perfectly feasible for students to take these college courses, including freshmen, without a problem. These are not the only elective courses students can take in high school. Students can still participate in several other elective courses while taking HSB classes. The High School of Business is in partnership with DECA, a competitive business event in which students don’t have to be enrolled in HSB to participate.

Ready to apply? The application process is simple. Students wishing to apply to the High School of Business must have teacher recommendations, fill out an application, and complete three writing prompts. It’s that easy! If students miss the application deadlines, they still have a chance to get into the program. They will then be put on a waiting list to be accepted or denied. I’ve gained great personal experiences, participated in internship opportunities, and even made new friends in the HSB program, so signing up is well worth it.
